GCNYC is proud to join the United Nations Conscious Fashion Lifestyle Network (UN CFLN), a joint initiative of the United Nations Office for Partnerships and the Fashion Impact Fund. As the graduate school for the Common Good, GCNYC is foundationally built upon the framework of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs) and proudly champions an inclusive commitment to our shared future through our unique approach to higher education and curriculum.
Discussions about sustainability and positive impact for the fashion industry are increasingly gaining attention because of the scale and scope of the fashion industry’s influence on humans and the planet. As an industry with impacts spanning across all of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, the global fashion industry must manage its negative impacts if the UN SDGs are to be achieved. The dependance on marginalized female labor, global matrix of supply chains, massive environmental footprint, and ongoing human rights violations make the fashion industry a challenging system to tackle. Managing these unique conditions requires collaborative action through community building. The UN CFLN is an important tool for creating dynamic opportunities for impact-focused collaboration across the global fashion space.
GCNYC’s commitment to the UN SDGs manifests in our impact-focused graduate programs, including our Master of Science in Sustainable Fashion. Our college proudly has the only Sustainable Fashion graduate program in the Americas, with novel curriculum approaches focused on action-oriented tangible sustainability learning for a unique industry. The program works to empower tomorrow’s change makers with the necessary understanding and critical thinking skills to leverage sustainability and impact frameworks today and throughout their careers. Sustainability for fashion is an emergent and changing concept, and we aim for our graduates to be able to be stewards of a better fashion industry today and every day forward. Our sustainable fashion community is diverse, inclusive, and strives to be innovative through an emphasis on applied research creating a cohort of scholars, professionals, and strategists all seeking to drive change for a fashion system, and world, in desperate need of it.
